1960 Fire Prevention Week (Image 1960-024_004)

Description
From San Marcos Record: Fire Prevention Week got one of its biggest boosts in the history of San Marcos this week as a fire department team of Jack Major (left) and young Sherrell Slayter, David Major and Edward Rodenberg put on assembly programs in public schools throughout the city. Students were urged at the schools to make home fire inspections and correct any hazards they found. Here Fire Marshall Major extinguishes one of the most common hazards. From San Marcos Record: hangar gone plane intact – The San Marcos City Airport lost a large portion of roofing from some of its hangars, but no damage was reported to the heavily moored aircraft. Sheet metal from the hangar was strewn downwind more that 100 yards.

From San Marcos Record: We picked cotton Friday night until eleven then began closing up everything before we finally left our farm homes about 2 a. m. Sunday. This is the E. S. Lauritsen family from near Palacios who arrived in San Marcos early Sunday and could not find lodging anywhere. Later they went to Wimberley after camps there had been reopened to shelter those from coastal areas.

From San Marcos Record: Small but significant were strands of broken electrical and telephone lines that lay sagging from poles in the area. Repairmen working around the clock soon had most of the systems back in operation, however, LCRA estimated damages to their facilities at $10,000 to $15,000 in the San Marcos area.

From San Marcos Record: A shining example of the helping hands of San Marcans was Mrs. Henry Autrey, left, who housed more than 30 Hurricane Carla refugees and slept on the floor to provide more bed space. Kelly Shelton, second from the left, a college student staying at Mrs. Autry's house, helped her a great deal with the visitors, she said. Showing appreciation in their smiles are visiting refugees, Mrs. Caroline Morgan of Hitchcock, seated, Mrs. Madeline Russell of Alvin, and Earnest McCauley of Alvin.

From San Marcos Record: Red Cross workers get an idea of the intensity of the wind, as Dr. Jean Smith shows them the flag that had ripped from its staff outside of Carson's Monday. Carson's donated its facilities to the Red Cross to help care for the scores of Gulf Coast refugees who poured into the area.

From San Marcos Record: Braving hurricane winds these LCRA employees worked feverishly Monday night to get electrical services back in shape after trees had damaged the lines. In spite of gallant efforts of such workers as these the power stayed off in much of downtown San Marcos all of Monday night.
