Some of the men who took their oaths of office were, left to right, Will King, deputy sheriff; Tom Arch Allen, tax assessor & collector; Wallace T. Barber, district attorney; James R. Hall, surveyor; and Ollie Herzog, constable of Kyle.

From San Marcos Record: Heave that Bale – men worked for hours last Wednesday, January 11th to clear the bales of cotton dumped into a ditch by a truck that went out of control on RR12 and Blanco Street. Miraculously, the truck from Robstown or the driver, Billy Gene Wallace of Corpus Christi, received no damage. From January 19, 1961, issue.

From San Marcos Record: Paul Castaneda and Lucinda Conrads were named to the All-State Orchestra in early January of 1961. Paul and Lucinda will represent San Marcos High School in the All-State Band in February. The SMHS orchestra is under the direction of Ed Lyons.

Driver of the truck, Ralph Brown, was hospitalized with broken ribs and the truck received an estimated $3000 in damage.

From San Marcos Record: Yard of the Month – The spacious yard at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Conway has been awarded the Yard of the month plaque for the month of January. Mrs. Conway stands on the front porch of her attractive home which is bordered in front by viburnum, hypericum, pyracantha, and nandina. The most unique thing about the yard is the large number of persimmon and Spanish oak trees in the front yard. Banana Trees are planted near the garage while the chimney makes a pretty background for a large pyracantha. Poinsettias were in bloom during Christmas season. Camellia bushes and a loquat tree are located near the east side of the house. In the back yard are chrysanthemums, roses, cannas, crepe myrtles, and hollyhocks. The yard covers more than one half acres, The beauty of it is hard to put into words. It can best be appreciated by seeing it.

From San Marcos Record: For most advancement in the Capital Area Council of Boy Scouts of America, Steve Gregg, right received the award for the Twin Valley District. On the left is scout executive Frank Hilton of the district. The award was given at the annual Council Banquet and meeting in Austin last Thursday.
