This collection includes promotional photos of musicians from Duke-Peacock Records based in Houston, Texas. This label was influential in shaping American rhythm and blues, soul, and gospel music. The label was most prominent in the 1950s and 1960s. Some musicians in this collection include Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, Johnny Ace, Bobby Bland, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Big Mama Thornton, and Stevie Wonder.

Biographical Note

Duke-Peacock Records was a joint label that was influential in the promotion of African American rhythm and blues musicians in the 1950s and 1960s. Don Robey founded Peacock records in 1949 to promote a musician he managed, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown. Soon Peacock Records expanded, and Robey partnered up with James Mattias of Duke Records in 1952 to create the joint label. Located on 2807 Erastus Street in Houston, Texas Duke-Peacock was a major influence on American rhythm and blues, gospel, and soul. Many well-known musicians were a part of the label including Johnny Ace, Big Mama Thornton, Lightnin’ Hopkins, and Bobby Bland.  

Scope and Contents

Donated by Doug Hanners this collection contains 151 promotional photographs of musicians from Duke-Peacock Records, dated circa 1950-1969. Some musicians in this collection include Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, Johnny Ace, Bobby Bland, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Big Mama Thornton, and Stevie Wonder.
