Description
The Russell Lee Collection came to The Wittliff Collections through donations since 1986 by Jean Lee, Bill Wittliff, Dow Chapman and Wally Ellinger. This collection of photographs, correspondence, personal and legal documents, artifacts, paintings and publications ranges in date from 1901-1991, the bulk of the material dates from 1936-1942.

The Raw Deal Collection Description

Description
The documents and photographs comprising The Raw Deal Collection span 1972-1983 and document the activities and operation of “The Raw Deal” and “Another Raw Deal” restaurants in Austin, Texas. The collection is arranged into two series: Textual Materials and Photographs. Photographs comprise the bulk of the collection and document the diversity of patrons who frequented The Raw Deal. In the 1970s and early 1980s, The Raw Deal became a symposium of sorts for notable writers, journalists, artists, musicians, and politicians in Austin. The affordability of the restaurant and the no-frills atmosphere also resulting in a convergence of individuals from varied socioeconomic backgrounds. Photographs include notable persons such as Ann Richards, David Richards, Bob Bullock, Ralph Yarborough, Kenneth Threadgill, co-owners Fletcher Boone and Jim “Lopez” Smitham, Bob Armstrong, musician Jerry Jeff Walker, and journalist Kay Northcott.

Description
This digitized collection includes images of Willie Nelson performances, portraits, and snapshots, as well as images of his bandmembers and associates. Photographs were taken 1975-1979, and often appear in Kindrick’s publication Action Magazine.

"Retracing Russell Lee" Project Collection Description

Description
In July, 1991, a team of photographers and oral historians from Texas State University set out to retrace the steps of Farm Security Administration photographer, Russell Lee (1903-1986). Fifty years after Lee visited and photo-documented the living and working conditions of the Depression era communities of San Augustine, Texas, and Pie Town, New Mexico, this group was inspired by Lee’s FSA images held at Texas State’s Wittliff Collections.
This digitized portion of the collection includes photographs, audio oral histories, and video recordings.

The conversation is moderated by David Coleman (Director of The Wittliff Collections) who discusses with Carter his background and photographic career. This event was held at The Wittliff Collections for the opening exhibition of Viva Jerry Jeff!, which celebrates the origin and wild times of a Texas icon, Jerry Jeff Walker. Opening begins with three songs sung by folk singer, Rachel Laven. Music curator, Hector Saldaña, interviewed Susan Walker (Jerry Jeff's spouse and manager) and Jerry Jeff (recording artist) about their careers and relationship.

Symposium event celebrating the exhibition and archives opening of Sandra Cisneros collection. Introductory remarks by David Coleman (Director of the Wittliff Collections), Denise Trauth (President of Texas State University), Katie Salzmann (lead archivist), and Steve Davis (Curator). Sandra Cisneros then gave a brief introduction about herself, explained why she choose to donate her archives to Texas State, and a reading. This was followed by a conversation with John Phillip Santos and concluded by a question and answer session.
