Information provided by users of original Flickr collection: "SMDR 1960-01-19. Rugel Rowland walked into Scotties Taxi Stand and shot taxi driver Robert Burt in the lower abdomen with a .45 caliber pistol. Two hours later, Rowland surrendered without provocation after a barrage of teargas was shot his way. He barricade himself in his apartment behind the bus station and the Chat 'n Curl Beauty Shop. In those two hours, a crowd of 1,000 spectators had gathered to check out the commotion. Rowland claimed that Burt used his name in vain. Rowland said there had been a great deal of cursing around the taxi stand by Bob Burt and he was seized with a desire to strike out that sort of thing and stop it. Burt stated that he had said nothing to Mr. Rowland. Most of the two hours spent in apprehending Rowland were used in waiting on teargas to arrive from Austin. Rangers arrived 30 minutes after the shooting with the teargas but it had deteriorated because of its age. The Rangers called Austin to send more gas to the scene, arriving after another 30 min wait. Later 14 bullet holes were found beneath the window inside the apartment. Rowland mentioned in his statement that the reason for the shots inside the apartment were because he thought the teargas shells were dynamic and he was trying to shoot them before they blew up. Rowland was detained at the Hays County Jail with a charge filed by Sherrif Gary of assault with an attempt to murder. The bullet that hit 62-year-old Burt entered the lower part of his abdomen and came out the fleshy part of the back with no bones hit. He was given a good chance of recovery. Rowland was later declared insane and sent to the state hospital in Austin."
